East Balmain Foreshore

The design for the renewal of East Balmain’s Foreshore will incorporate the adaptive re-use of the historic 1880s sandstone Bells Store which will be surrounded by a new public open space on Sydney Harbour.

The project involves a complex resolution of public access and transport and creates a memorable public space which embraces its location and historic importance as the initial urbanisation point of the Balmain peninsula. The design of the foreshore is highly sensitive to preserving the character of the existing Bruce McKenzie designed Illoura Reserve, of which it will form an extension. Detailing of paths and sandstone walls reference this exceptional example of the ‘Sydney School’ design. The project involves a new forecourt to the Bell’s Store, scenic turf banks and terraced outlooks.
