This unique playground is far from being a collection of catalogue items. Instead it arises from a cohesive landscape approach involving carefully chosen materials, textures, colours, levels and spaces. Nestled between Birrarung Marr and Federation Square, it is the largest all-abilities playground within the City of Melbourne.
A series of flowing forms that integrate play space with landscape. The playground caters for children attending workshops at the associated Artplay building as well as the many users of the Yarra River parklands. Play elements largely consist of custom designed features that create a unified solution for the whole playground.
A series of tall steel sculptural poles act as the supporting structure for the arcing decks. A large flowing sandpit and grassed mound form the central forecourt and link the two arcs together.
Earthy tones, flowing forms and native vegetation support an Australian landscape theme that encourages interaction and experimentation.
